Ingredients
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (if frozen, no need to thaw)
2 cups fresh spinach (loosely packed)
1/4 cup purified water or low-sodium bone broth (for consistency and added nutrients)
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil (for healthy fats and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins)
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional, powerful anti-inflammatory, use sparingly for very sensitive cats)
Pinch of black pepper (optional, a tiny pinch helps activate turmeric's benefits)
- Equipment
Blender or food processor
Small saucepan with lid (optional, for steaming spinach)
Ice cube trays or small airtight containers for freezing
Airtight container for refrigerator storage
Directions
- Prepare Spinach: If using fresh spinach, you can briefly steam it for 2-3 minutes until wilted, then immediately plunge into ice water to retain color and nutrients. This can make it easier to blend and more digestible for some pets. Drain well. (Alternatively, you can use it raw if your blender is powerful enough).
- Combine Ingredients in Blender: Add the blueberries (fresh or frozen), prepared spinach, water or bone broth, extra virgin olive oil/flaxseed oil, ground turmeric (if using), and black pepper (if using) to your blender or food processor.
- Blend to a Smooth Puree: Start blending on a low setting, gradually increasing the speed. Blend until the mixture is completely smooth and no large pieces remain. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender a few times.
If the puree is too thick, add a tiny bit more water or bone broth, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. It should be spoonable but not watery. - Cool (if warm): If you steamed the spinach or if the blending process warmed the puree, allow it to cool completely before storing.
- Storage:
Refrigerator: Transfer the puree to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days.
Freezer (Recommended for portioning): For longer storage and easy portioning, spoon the puree into ice cube trays. Once frozen solid, pop the cubes out and transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored in the freezer for 1-2 months. Thaw individual cubes in the refrigerator as needed. - How to Serve & Feeding Guidelines:
This puree is a fantastic supplement to your senior pet's regular food.
Simply spoon the recommended amount over their wet or dry food at mealtime. You can also mix it in.
Cats & Small Dogs (under 20 lbs): 1/2 - 1 tablespoon per day.
Medium Dogs (20-50 lbs): 1 - 2 tablespoons per day.
Large Dogs (over 50 lbs): 2 - 3 tablespoons per day.
