This gentle and nourishing mash provides easily digestible protein and carbohydrates, along with essential vitamins and fiber, making it ideal for sensitive stomachs, recovery, or as a healthy addition to any pet's diet.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey (93% lean or higher is ideal)

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1.5 - 2 pounds total), peeled and chopped into 1-inch cubes

  • 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken or turkey bone broth (or plain water), plus more if needed

  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil (for healthy fats and easier digestion)

  • Optional: 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley (for breath and vitamins)

  • Optional: 1/4 cup finely chopped cooked green beans or peas (for added fiber and nutrients)

  • Equipment
  • Large pot for boiling/steaming sweet potatoes

  • Large skillet for cooking turkey

  • Potato masher, fork, or food processor/blender

  • Airtight containers for storage

Directions

  • Cook Sweet Potatoes: Place the chopped sweet potatoes in a large pot. Cover with water by about an inch. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender. Drain thoroughly.
  • Cook Ground Turkey: While sweet potatoes are cooking, place the ground turkey in a large skillet over medium heat. Break up the turkey with a spoon and cook until it's completely browned and no pink remains. Drain off any excess fat from the turkey. Rinse briefly with hot water in a colander if you want to remove even more fat for extra sensitive stomachs, then drain very well.
  • Combine & Mash: Add the cooked, drained sweet potatoes and the cooked, drained turkey to a large mixing bowl. Add 1/2 cup of the bone broth (or water) and the olive oil/flaxseed oil.

If using optional additions like parsley, green beans, or peas, add them now.
Using a potato masher or a large fork, mash all the ingredients together until well combined and you reach your desired consistency. Some pets prefer it completely smooth, while others like a slightly chunkier texture.

If you desire a very smooth puree, you can transfer the mixture to a food processor or blender and process until smooth, adding a little more bone broth if needed.
  • Cool Completely: Allow the mash to cool completely before storing.
  • Storage: Store the "Easy-to-Digest Turkey & Sweet Potato Mash" in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze individual portions (e.g., in ice cube trays or small containers) for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
  • How to Serve & Feeding Guidelines: This mash can be served as a bland meal for upset stomachs, a hydrating meal topper, or mixed with your pet's regular food.
For Upset Stomachs/Recovery: Start with small, frequent meals (e.g., 1-2 tablespoons every few hours) and gradually increase the amount as your pet recovers.

    As a Meal Topper/Supplement:
Cats & Small Dogs (under 20 lbs): 1/4 - 1/2 cup per day, divided into meals.
Medium Dogs (20-50 lbs): 1/2 - 1 cup per day, divided into meals.
Large Dogs (over 50 lbs): 1 - 2 cups per day, divided into meals.

Notes

  • Important Notes:
Introduce Gradually: If your pet has a very sensitive stomach, introduce this mash gradually over 2-3 days, mixing a small amount with their regular food.
Plain Ingredients: Stick to plain, unseasoned ingredients. Avoid salt, pepper, onions, garlic, and other spices that are common in human cooking but toxic or irritating to pets.
Hydration: Always ensure your pet has access to fresh water, especially when transitioning diets.
Consult Your Vet: This recipe is designed to be gentle, but it's essential to consult your veterinarian if your pet is experiencing persistent digestive issues, vomiting, or diarrhea. This mash can be a supportive diet, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care.
Balance: While highly nutritious, this mash alone is not a complete and balanced diet for long-term feeding. It's best used as a temporary bland diet or as a supplement/topper to a commercial pet food.
