These soft, flavorful patties combine the moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties of coconut oil with the biotin and essential fatty acids from egg yolks, making them a powerhouse for a healthy, lustrous coat. These patties are a wonderful way to boost your pet's coat health from the inside out!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup organic extra virgin coconut oil (solid or slightly softened)

  • 2 large egg yolks (from pasture-raised or organic eggs, if possible)

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley (optional, for breath and antioxidants)

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional, for anti-inflammatory benefits, use sparingly for cats)

  • 2-3 tablespoons oat flour or finely ground rolled oats (to help bind, add more if needed)

  • Pinch of dried catnip (optional, only for cat-specific patties, sprinkle on half the batch if sharing)

  • Equipment
  • Small mixing bowl

  • Whisk or fork

  • Small silicone molds (candy molds, mini ice cube trays, or small cookie cutters work well)

  • OR parchment paper-lined baking sheet

  • Spatula or spoon

  • Airtight container for storage

Directions

  • Prepare Egg Yolks: Separate the egg yolks from the whites. Place the two egg yolks in your small mixing bowl. Discard the whites (or save them for human consumption). Whisk the egg yolks well until they are smooth and slightly pale.
  • Soften Coconut Oil: If your coconut oil is completely solid, gently warm it until it's soft enough to mix easily, but not liquid. You can do this by placing the jar in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes, or gently warming in a microwave for 10-15 seconds at a time. It should be the consistency of a soft butter or thick cream.
  • Combine Ingredients: Add the softened coconut oil to the whisked egg yolks in the bowl. Mix thoroughly with a fork or whisk until completely combined and smooth.
  • Add Optional Enhancers: Stir in the finely chopped fresh parsley. If using, add the ground turmeric. Remember to use sparingly, especially if making treats for cats, as too much turmeric can sometimes cause digestive upset in felines. Gradually add the oat flour or finely ground oats, a tablespoon at a time, mixing well after each addition. You want the mixture to be thick enough to hold its shape but still pliable. The exact amount will depend on the consistency of your coconut oil and egg yolks.
  • Optional Catnip (if sharing): If you're making these for both dogs and cats and want to add catnip for the feline portion, scoop about half of the mixture into a separate small bowl. Stir a tiny pinch of dried catnip into only this cat-specific portion.
  • Form the Patties: Using Silicone Molds: This is the easiest method. Spoon or pipe the mixture into small silicone molds (e.g., mini heart molds, small bone molds, or tiny ice cube trays). This creates uniform, easy-to-portion treats.
Form the Patties:  Using Parchment Paper: If you don't have molds, line a small baking sheet or plate with parchment paper. Drop small spoonfuls of the mixture onto the parchment paper, forming them into tiny patty shapes (about 1/2-inch to 1-inch diameter).
  • Chill to Set: Place the molds or the baking sheet with the patties into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour, or until the patties are firm and solid. The coconut oil will re-solidify, holding the shape.
  • Remove from Molds & Store: Once firm, pop the patties out of the silicone molds. If you formed them on parchment paper, gently peel them off.
  • Storage: Store the "Coconut Oil & Egg Yolk Coat Enhancer Patties" in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. If frozen, allow them to thaw slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Important Notes:
    Raw Egg Yolk Safety:
While raw egg yolks are generally safe for pets and a great source of nutrients, there's a very slight risk of salmonella. This risk is minimal with fresh, high-quality eggs. If you are concerned, you can gently temper the egg yolks by very slowly adding a tiny amount of warm (not hot!) coconut oil to them while whisking, but don't cook them.
Gradual Introduction: Introduce these patties slowly into your pet's diet, especially if they are sensitive to new foods. Start with half the recommended amount for a few days.
Calorie Content: Coconut oil is calorie-dense. Adjust your pet's regular food intake if you're giving these regularly, especially if your pet is prone to weight gain.
Consult Your Vet: Always consult your veterinarian before introducing new supplements or making significant changes to your pet's diet, especially if they have any underlying health conditions.
