These treats are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are fantastic for promoting healthy skin and a shiny coat in both dogs and cats. They're also wonderfully crunchy and irresistible!

Ingredients

  • Skin from 1-2 pounds of fresh, wild-caught salmon

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Pinch of dried parsley

  • Pinch of dried catnip (optional for cats)

  • Equipment
  • Baking sheet

  • Parchment paper

  • Sharp knife or kitchen shears

  • Paper towels

  • Airtight container for storage

Directions

  • Preheat Oven & Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This is crucial for preventing sticking and making clean-up easy.
  • Clean and Dry Salmon Skin: Lay the salmon skin flat, flesh-side up.
  • Using a spoon or the back of a knife, gently scrape off any excess salmon flesh that may be clinging to the skin. You want it as clean as possible.
  • Rinse the skin briefly under cold water. Pat the salmon skin very dry with paper towels. The drier it is, the crispier your treats will be.
  • Cut into Treat-Sized Pieces: Using a sharp knife or kitchen shears, cut the salmon skin into small, bite-sized pieces. For cats and smaller dogs, aim for 1/2-inch to 1-inch squares or strips. For larger dogs, you can go up to 2-inch pieces. Try to make them relatively uniform in size so they cook evenly.
  • Arrange on Baking Sheet: Spread the salmon skin pieces in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Ensure they are not overlapping, as this will prevent even crisping.
  • Bake to Perfection: Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the salmon skin pieces are golden brown, crispy, and brittle. Halfway through the baking time (around 10-15 minutes), flip the pieces to ensure even cooking and crispness on both sides. Keep a close eye on them towards the end, as they can burn quickly. They should be very firm and snap easily when cool. If they are still chewy, they need more time.
  • Cool Completely: Once done, remove the baking sheet from the oven. Let the salmon skin treats cool completely on the baking sheet. They will become even crispier as they cool.
  • Storage: Store the completely cooled "Shine & Glow Salmon Skin Treats" in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months.

Notes

  • Optional Flavoring (for extra goodness!): In a bowl, you can toss the salmon skin pieces with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. This is optional but can help them crisp up and adds even more beneficial fats. If using, sprinkle in a pinch of dried parsley for dogs and cats.
If you have both dogs and cats and want to add catnip: Separate half of the salmon skin pieces onto a separate part of the baking sheet or a second small baking sheet. Sprinkle a tiny pinch of dried catnip over only the cat portions.
